I Just Can’t Get My Fill Of Music

Not that this means I can’t be satisfied with the music I have, of course.

So, since it’s been another lengthy hiatus from the ol’ blogosphere for yours truly, I figured I’d ease myself back into the fold with another Colin’s Collection post. Besides, there’s a big snowstorm coating my neighborhood with icy white powder and blocking off the doors with little walls of ice. And since shoveling efforts will prove to be quite futile until the storm stops, I’ve got nothing to do at the moment.

(Ah, the joys of shoveling snow. Remember when you were a kid and the snow used to be a lot of fun because you’d get the day off from school and you could go sledding with your friends? Yeah, when you grow up and you have to start shoveling it and driving in it, the snow gets a lot less fun. Growing up sucks, kids.)

But anyway, rather than making this all about the big snowstorm that’s been pounding the Northeast US all day, let’s get back to the point of this post: recent additions to my music collection! You can find them after the jump.

POTW #5: Wolfgang Amadeus Frattura

Yeah, that’s right. This is now a classical music blog! And we’re going to start this new era of blogging by celebrating the life, music, and all-around awesomeness of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of the greatest child prodigies ever known to man. The guy had such a good ear for music that by the time he was, like, five years old he could listen to someone play a piece on the harpsichord and then sit down and play it himself note for note. That’s pretty remarkable talent, man.

Plus, you know a classical composer is awesome when he’s got movies, ’80s one-hit wonders, and Simpsons parodies of said ’80s one-hit wonders inspired by his greatness.

Okay, so I’m not actually going to start writing about classical music on this blog. It’s still the same rock/indie/metal/etc. blog as always. I’m just in a goofy mood at the moment. Not that you’d know this from looking at me, because I am sitting alone in my apartment on a Saturday night typing all this while the rest of the world is having fun without me. I’m 23 years old and I’ve already apparently forgotten what it’s like to be young… or maybe I just don’t feel like cramming into bars that are already so stuffed with people that I can’t get from point A to point B without taking a detour through points C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z, not necessarily in that order and also allowing for possible repeats.

And yes, I only named all the letters between C and Z for additional effect. Just be glad I didn’t start getting into the Greek alphabet, or all those letters Dr. Seuss made up in On Beyond Zebra.

Not pictured: Spazz, Floob, Zatz, Jogg, Flunn, Itch, Yekk, Vroo, Hi!, and that one that combines all 26 "normal" letters.

Keep Your Baseball Cards — I’m Collecting Music

Look everyone! I’m still alive, and I haven’t completely forgotten about this blog!

Sorry I’ve gone an eternity or two (closer to two at this point) without updating anything. I’ve kind of been busy — papers to write, midterms to prepare for… you know, college stuff. As a result, I haven’t really been in the mood to write much lately. College would be so much better without all that crap, wouldn’t you agree? (And yes, I know that would completely defeat the purpose of college. This does not change the fact that midterms and essays suck ass.)

Anyway, my birthday was a few weeks ago and I turned — gulp — 23. (My youth is all but officially over and I don’t even feel like it’s started yet. Can I get a do-over on this whole “life” thing? No? Well, that sucks.) I got some presents — as of September 27, 2009, I officially became multi-instrumental when I got a bass guitar — and some money to spend. Which means it’s time for another Colin’s Collection post! Yay!

Sept. 18, 2009: Show #24

All right! The new semester is well underway, and I’ve got another playlist to post here for you all. Twenty-four shows, man. And I somehow still haven’t completely run out of ideas for Top 5 lists! Yesterday I read an Associated Press article that said the economic recession may finally be over. I would have linked to it here and made a joke about how I’ve saved the economy by buying music, allowing me to bask in a wonderful I-told-you-so moment, but now I can’t find the article anywhere. Figures.

May 8, 2009: Show #21

Hey everyone! I’m finally back after yet another lengthy hiatus from the blogosphere. I just got back home last night from a nine-day vacation with my family in Ocean City, MD (we have a house down there). The weather was consistently pleasant, despite the meteorologists’ insistence to the contrary for a few days; the pool was always a bit chilly at first but would soon become comfortable; there was a nice breeze at the beach; the new Harry Potter movie was pretty solid; my dad celebrated his birthday; the Phillies have been kicking ass for the last few weeks (including tonight’s 10-1 demolition of the Cubs) and are the favorites to trade for kickass pitcher Roy Halladay; Married With Children reruns were on a lot in the morning and are still hilarious; I finally got to read Thank You For Smoking; and all in all it was a pretty good week.

So now that I’m back in the Keystone State, I bring you the playlist for my penultimate show of the 2008-09 school year on May 8, 2009. The playlist and more after the jump!

POTW #2: The King Is Dead, Long Live The King

So, as everyone in the universe obviously knows by now, Michael Jackson died on Thursday after suffering a heart attack. Michael was the King of Pop, a man who spent his entire life in the public eye and created some classic pop music for most of it. Everyone likes something Michael Jackson created during his long and incredibly successful career in music. This is because when he was at the top of his game, he found ways to connect with all kinds of music fans. He invented the Moonwalk, won a ton of awards, scored tons of hit singles, revolutionized the music video, was among the masterminds behind USA For Africa (he co-wrote “We Are The World”), made the best-selling album in the history of music (Thriller), and struck a chord with millions of people worldwide. And he did it in spite of violent abuse from his father as a child and deep-rooted mental traumas that haunted him throughout his life.

Over the last 20 years he became a highly controversial and polarizing figure, due in no small part to allegations of child molestation and questions surrounding his abilities as a parent. He also had numerous plastic surgeries done to his face, completely disfiguring his nose. As a result, he became known less as the King of Pop and more as Wacko Jacko.

But we’re not here to talk about any of that stuff. See, in one of my English classes this past semester, I learned the concept of “the death of the author.” Basically what that means is that criticism is at its most effective when you separate the creator from his or her work. People tend to put more focus on what they think a work meant to its creator rather than their own interpretation of the work. It’s about reviewing the work itself and ignoring external factors.

So today, for my picks of the week, we’re going to take a look at some King of Pop classics for the great pop songs they are and just ignore all this Wacko Jacko business for a little bit. Not to sound hypocritical or anything, but I’m pretty sure that’s what Michael would have wanted.

May 1, 2009: Show #20

Hey everyone! It’s been a while since I last updated this blog, so here I am. It’s kind of sad that I have to start every other post with pretty much that exact sentence, especially considering how much free time I have. But whatever. Here we are, and to atone somewhat for my recent absence I give you Bret Michaels getting clotheslined by a Tony Awards set piece.

Oh, I kid you, Mr. Michaels. I know you’ve contributed a lot to American pop culture. Without Poison, nobody would know what “Unskinny Bop” means. And without Rock of Love Bus, we wouldn’t have been subjected to the first televised twat shot that wasn’t on HBO or late-night Cinemax or some random subscription-only porn channel. Truth be told, I’m not sure what to make of this dude. Sometimes he actually does seem like a nice guy, but then sometimes on his show he’ll make the girls do or wear something really sleazy, and one of them will be like, “I don’t feel comfortable doing this” and he’ll just say, “Oh, come on, you need to learn how to party.”

But enough about Bret Michaels. I’m not even sure why I’m writing so much about him since I’m not a Poison fan and I didn’t play any of his music on my show. And speaking of which, here’s the playlist from May 1, 2009.

Top 5 Songs That Officially Made Me A Fan Of The Bands That Wrote Them

I have a real knack for coming up with really really long titles for these lists, don’t I? And there are more long list titles where that came from, trust me.

Anyway, this top 5 is a list of the songs that basically secured my status as a fan of these bands. In other words, if I had ever been on the fence about these bands, these are the songs that got me off that fence. For some, I had already liked a few songs but hadn’t felt the urge to add some albums to my collection until I heard a song on this list. With others, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the band at all and was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. And in a rare case or two, I found my previous opinion of the band being completely shattered. These were the songs that sealed the deal, the songs that made me want to check out some albums by the artists on this list. And in each case, I’m so very glad I did.

April 3, 2009: Show #17

Hey everyone! I’ve got good news and bad news for you all.

Bad news first: As it turns out, the motherboard in my computer got all fucked up by a virus or something, so I had to get a new one. To everyone who has ever created a computer virus in your life, FUCK YOU. I HOPE SOMEONE FINDS A WAY TO PUT A COMPUTER VIRUS IN YOUR BRAIN SO YOUR DEATH SHALL BE ONE OF GREAT POETIC JUSTICE. Of course, then somebody will find a way to build on this idea and make these computer viruses contagious from person to person. Who says technological advances are always good things?

While I’m on the subject of evil technology, I wonder how many people thought the wheel was a bad idea. There’s your food for thought for today.

Also, more bad news: This show is by far the shortest playlist in the history of Listen Up! And that includes the hour-long “audition shows” I did in the fall 2008 semester. It got cut off by Maryland baseball before the one-hour mark, also making this the first edition of Listen Up! that didn’t end with a weekly Top 5 list. But isn’t that how it always goes? The jocks beating up the band geeks or something like that? First they took your lunch money, then they took your girlfriends, now they’re taking your airtime on the radio.

I won’t be doing a show this Friday, March 20, due to me being home in Pennsylvania for Spring Break. Or as I like to call it, Winter Break Jr. The weather around here is still kind of cloudy and chilly. Still, it’s always nice to spend some quality time with the family.

Top 5 Favorite Song Titles (For Now)

There are plenty of ways to make a song memorable for your listeners. You could write really intelligent, thoughtful, or clever lyrics that people can relate to or think about long after the song’s over. You could be a master of melodies, crafting instantly recognizable hooks that never ever ever get unstuck from the listener’s head once they get stuck in it. If you’re particularly awesome at your instrument of choice, you could play a really cool solo that fits right into your song like a hand inside a glove.

Or you could always give your song a really hilarious title. And no matter what you think of the bands on this list, you have to admit that they do have a knack for amusing song titles.

That said, if you don’t like “emo-punk…” ABANDON ALL HOPE, YE WHO ENTER HERE. Because there are going to be two such songs on this list. And since this is strictly about the song titles, I figure I don’t have to do too much of a write-up beyond listing other amusing song titles by the bands on this list.

Now, this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down. And I’d like to take a minute, so just sit right there…

…and ENJOY THE GENIUS.

I’m on a bit of a ’90s nostalgia kick lately, aren’t I? Anyway, for this edition of ENJOY THE GENIUS I felt like paying homage to some of the finest musicians to ever pick up a guitar. And no, I’m not talking about the Hendrixes and Claptons of the world. Those guys get plenty of love from just about everyone, and deservedly so. No, today I feel like paying tribute to some of the less heralded masters of the craft.
