Top 5 Lists I Didn’t Get To Do On My Show
During my tenure at WMUC2 as the host of Listen Up!, I did 34 shows. Only two of them ended without a Top 5 list – three if you count the Top 20 Shortest Songs list, which I did as part of an experiment to see how many songs I could squeeze into two hours – and only one of those was because I didn’t have an idea for the week. The other was because my show was cut short by a Maryland baseball game.

Of course, along with the 32 lists that made it to the airwaves, there were several list ideas that I never got to do. Most of the time it was because I had a hard time thinking of five songs with which to fill the list, which kind of defeats the purpose of the whole “Top 5” thing. But that’s what happens when you try to classify songs into excessively specific categories, especially because my brain isn’t quite the encyclopedia of music knowledge that I would have liked for it to be. It certainly would have made filling these lists a lot easier!

Colin’s Collection: The Class of 2011 (So Far)
Jeez, how long has it been since the last Colin’s Collection post on this blog? Two weeks? Man, that’s like an eternity in the blogosphere. Can you imagine what would happen if I went a whole year without giving you your sorely-needed updates on what I’ve been listening to? Buildings would collapse! People would be driven to madness! The space-time continuum would implode and the universe as we know it would come to an end!
And according to my WordPress dashboard, people would still keep coming here in search of one freaking picture that isn’t even there anymore because apparently it violated ImageShack guidelines or whatever.
But anyway, since I’m taking a little longer to churn out the next Blast From The Past entry than I would like (not to mention the next Top 5, among other features), here’s a little something to occupy your blog-reading time until I finally finish it… after the jump, naturally.
I Just Can’t Get My Fill Of Music
Not that this means I can’t be satisfied with the music I have, of course.
So, since it’s been another lengthy hiatus from the ol’ blogosphere for yours truly, I figured I’d ease myself back into the fold with another Colin’s Collection post. Besides, there’s a big snowstorm coating my neighborhood with icy white powder and blocking off the doors with little walls of ice. And since shoveling efforts will prove to be quite futile until the storm stops, I’ve got nothing to do at the moment.

(Ah, the joys of shoveling snow. Remember when you were a kid and the snow used to be a lot of fun because you’d get the day off from school and you could go sledding with your friends? Yeah, when you grow up and you have to start shoveling it and driving in it, the snow gets a lot less fun. Growing up sucks, kids.)
But anyway, rather than making this all about the big snowstorm that’s been pounding the Northeast US all day, let’s get back to the point of this post: recent additions to my music collection! You can find them after the jump.
Keep Your Baseball Cards — I’m Collecting Music
Look everyone! I’m still alive, and I haven’t completely forgotten about this blog!
Sorry I’ve gone an eternity or two (closer to two at this point) without updating anything. I’ve kind of been busy — papers to write, midterms to prepare for… you know, college stuff. As a result, I haven’t really been in the mood to write much lately. College would be so much better without all that crap, wouldn’t you agree? (And yes, I know that would completely defeat the purpose of college. This does not change the fact that midterms and essays suck ass.)
Anyway, my birthday was a few weeks ago and I turned — gulp — 23. (My youth is all but officially over and I don’t even feel like it’s started yet. Can I get a do-over on this whole “life” thing? No? Well, that sucks.) I got some presents — as of September 27, 2009, I officially became multi-instrumental when I got a bass guitar — and some money to spend. Which means it’s time for another Colin’s Collection post! Yay!

All right! The new semester is well underway, and I’ve got another playlist to post here for you all. Twenty-four shows, man. And I somehow still haven’t completely run out of ideas for Top 5 lists! Which reminds me… it’s been a really long time since the last time I posted a Top 5 writeup. Maybe I’ll get around to doing it this weekend. It would make more sense for me to post the next one some time in December, seeing as how it was a Christmas special, but I’d rather just post them in the order they were aired. Makes it easier for me to keep track of which ones I’ve done and which ones I haven’t done. I might get around to finally posting it here soon… but until then, sit tight.

Hey there you all! It’s been a pretty long time since the last time I wrote a Colin’s Collection post. How long, you ask? So long ago that I hadn’t even come up with the Colin’s Collection series idea yet. Or When Bad Songs Happen To Good Bands, for that matter. Picks Of The Week didn’t exist yet either.
Granted, those are all fairly recent additions to this li’l website, but still… just in case you’re curious what my recent musical acquisitions have been, here you go!
Intronaut: Prehistoricisms
- Got this after seeing them open for Mastodon in Washington, DC back in May. Kylesa was pretty kick-ass as well.
Pavement: Crooked Rain Crooked Rain (L.A.’s Desert Origins), Terror Twilight
- Fun fact: Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood can be heard playing harmonica on two tracks from Terror Twilight. Is there anything that guy can’t play?
Silversun Pickups: Swoon
- My opinion from Picks Of The Week numero uno has not changed. “Panic Switch” still rules.
Thrice: The Alchemy Index Vols. III & IV: Air & Earth
- Kudos to the guys from Thrice for their handling of their new album Beggars being leaked online. Some people push back the release date of their albums. Axl Rose sued the guy who leaked Chinese Democracy. Thrice pushed the release date forward, making it available on iTunes as of… right now, actually, and rescheduling the physical release for September 15 with five bonus tracks.
Band Of Horses: Everything All The Time
- These guys get compared to My Morning Jacket a lot. And My Morning Jacket are great, so I don’t see anything wrong with that.
Arctic Monkeys: Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not
- Speaking of the Monkeys… their new album Humbug drops in a couple weeks. My dad’s band played “When The Sun Goes Down” at a party I went to recently, which was pretty cool. “He’s a scumbag, don’tcha know…”
British Sea Power: Do You Like Rock Music?
- Yes, I do. I especially like “Lights Out For Darker Skies,” which was one of my Picks Of The Week last week.
Green Day: 21st Century Breakdown
- Saw these guys in Philly back on July 21. It was a ton of fun, from the mock exorcism during “East Jesus Nowhere” to the fan being brought on stage to play “Jesus Of Suburbia.”
Gojira: From Mars To Sirius
- Think of these guys as the French Mastodon. And I love Mastodon.
Cave In: Antenna, Tides Of Tomorrow EP
- Still on the lookout for Jupiter and Perfect Pitch Black at the moment. “Come Into Your Own” was also a recent Pick Of The Week.
Modest Mouse: We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
- They just released a new 8-track EP called No One’s First, And You’re Next. The songs are all B-sides from their last two albums.
I’m pretty sure that covers all the recent additions to Colin’s Collection. So much good music out there, and so little money to spend on it… but I guess that’s why people are always on the lookout for free downloads, huh?
POTW #3: Love These Songs Cancerously
Hello again. It’s been a while since the last time I — oh wait, I just updated this blog a few hours ago. Never mind.
Well, here I am again, ready to write another lengthy post for your reading pleasure. It’s either that or go downstairs and watch the Jon & Kate Plus 8 marathon on TLC with my sister and her friends. Can someone please explain all the buzz over this show? I’ve seen a few episodes, and it’s probably the second-most boring reality show I’ve ever seen. We get it, Jon and Kate — you have eight adorable kids, and you like to take them to the zoo and do other normal family stuff. Hooray for you. As much as I can’t stand that “Octomom” woman with the 14 kids and hate the fact that she’s famous and getting her own show, at least her complete insanity will give you something to watch.
For the record, the most boring reality show I’ve ever seen is Laguna Beach/The Hills. I’m sort of lumping these shows together because they’re basically two different boring shows about the same boring people. They sit there and talk while the cameras go back and forth between the same two camera angles and Natasha Bedingfield plays in the background. And what’s worse is that it’s blatantly scripted, so really it’s more like you’re watching a bad soap opera starring godawful amateur actors.
But anyway, I’m not here to rant about terrible reality shows (read: reality shows in general). I’m actually here to tell you all about the songs I haven’t been able to stop listening to lately. My picks of the week are coming up… after the jump!
